WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

I've been extremely impressed with all the poems you guys wrote this year. You not only wrote a lot of poems, but the quality was really high!

I can't wait to see more!! Next year's contest will be starting up again in just a few weeks. This year we're offering some new features. We will be making Honor Certificates for each and every child who writes a poem for the site. Your poem will go on the certificate, along with your name and a picture will even be optional. We'll email a copy to your parents.

Schools will also be able to sign up as members of the contest. If your school signs up as a member, we'll send them a copy of your certificate too they can print and hang up. Every school will be able to create their own 'Write Like a Rock Star Wall of Fame' featuring and celebrating their talented young authors.

Please give a buzz if you have any questions. I have Nan Miller to thank for the idea. Her hard work and dedication led two schools in Loves Park, Illinois (Windsor Elementary and Rock Cut Elementary - both near Rockford, IL) through an amazing burst of creativity as I saw hundreds of poems each week coming from these
two schools. Thanks Nan!!

And now, the winners.

RUNNER UP #4:

January, time for snow
Tell everyone you know.

Will the snow go or stay.

Dont be tardy.

Lets all play.

Lets all laugh and jump.
June, theres no school
So dont be a fool.
July, its summer still
Maybe learn a new skill.
August, the end of summer
What a bummer.
School starts in September,
Dont forget to remember.

Time for candy and a fright.
November, its Thanksgiving day
I'll send thanks your way.
December, Christmas day
Time for gifts and time to play.

Taylor M. of Loves Park, Illinois (5th Grade)

Taylor really went all out with this great stream of steady wonderment about the months of the year with tons of rhymes throughout.

I had the pleasure of meeting Taylor last week. As you may have guessed, she totally rocks!!!

RUNNER UP # 3:

My Other Brother

I have a first brother,
and his name is Sam,
He likes broccoli,
and also ham,

But just in a moment I asked my mother.
“Where. is. my.
Other Brother?”

“He's out in the field tying his shoe,
He needs some help. Would you?”

“As long as there is not a hive.
But wait! He's only five.
I will help him for you,
I will help him tie his shoe.”

It's really hard to have a brother,
Not my first, but my other.

“Mother! Mother!” I say to Mother.
“I do not want to have a brother!”

“Why don't you like a brother?”

“Because it's very hard to have a brother,
Not my first, but my other.”

“Live with it!” said Mother.

“Alright, I will have a brother.
I will not ask for another.”

Jasmine B. of Dover, Deleware (1st Grade)

Since the day I saw this poem submitted, I've been amazed with the rhyme:
“It's really hard to have a brother, not my first, but my other.” Super cool
way to get the point across. Having two brothers must be rough! Especially
if one of them's like me. LOL!!

I recall meeting Jasmine on New Year's Eve in Dover, Delaware. She was hanging
with her brother and parents at a downtown First Night Celebration. I was
singing and her family was so cool! They sat right in front and laughed at
all my jokes (even the ones that weren't funny!).

Jasmine, can't wait to read more ideas from you and hope to see you and your
family again soon!

RUNNER UP #2:

A.D.D

Have a good day my mom would say,
Not seeing my fear or the tears on my face.
Closing the car door to walk inside
Repeating to myself be brave dont cry.
Walking to class a glare on my face
Wanting to run and feeling ashamed,
Not really wanted scared and alone
Looking for someone, anyone to know.
I take a deep breath, let it out slow
Trying not to cry so my pain won't show.
So many directions, she going to fast,
I have to get out here. How long will this last.

Colin H. of Loves Park, Ilinois (4th Grade)

This is one of the deepest and most emotional poems I've ever read, period. To think it was written by a 4th grader is simply astounding. I predict great things for Colin!

I also was lucky enough to meet Colin last week. Very smart guy!! Can't wait to read his next poem!

RUNNER UP # 1:

The Wobblemen

The Wobblemen from planet Zen
Watch out! You better run from them.
They look like goopy blobs of jelly
They wiggle and wobble and are so smelly.
They want to take away your stillness
and give you a wiggly wobbly illness.
Watch out for the wobblemen ...if you want to smile again.

Joe W. of Olney, Maryland (4th Grade)

I suspect Joe might be a big fan of Captain Underpants. I could totally picture The Wobblemen becoming a super cool comic hero book. Joe, would you like to write another poem about the superhero who helps stop the Wobblemen? That'd be awesome!!

Joe, I was impressed with your ideas and hope we get to meet real soon! This poem rocks!!

GRAND PRIZE WINNER!!!:

On an Autumn Day

On an Autumn day you might see
colored leaves falling from a tree.
On an Autumn day you might spy
a cute little bird flying in the sky.
On an Autumn day you might listen
and you might hear a couple kissin'!
Ewww!

Amron B. of Tualatin, Oregon (3rd Grade)

Amron's poem has one of the best punch lines I've seen in the contest. Great stuff!! I can't wait to get to work on this one. I'm already working on some ideas and can't wait to talk with Amron on the phone. This is gonna be fun!!!
